Cyber Insurance in Kenya: How Lilian Mungai is Bridging the Gap

2 min read

Recent CCIS graduate, Lilian Mungai, is carving out a path in cyber insurance in Kenya. Her journey in the field wasn’t a straight line, but rather a winding path that led her to a career she’s passionate about. “I started noticing a growing trend: businesses were facing increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, and the financial fallout from data breaches was becoming catastrophic,” she explains. While working in an insurance brokerage covering everything from healthcare to business policies, she saw a critical gap—many companies struggled to connect the technical side of cybersecurity with the practical need for financial protection.

The Reality of Cyber Insurance In Kenya

As Kenya’s digital landscape expands, so do cyber threats; there is a real need for the cyber insurance industry in Kenya to evolve. Lilian notes that while awareness is growing, many businesses still struggle to bridge the gap between cybersecurity risks and financial protection. “Kenya’s cybersecurity industry is evolving rapidly, driven by technological advancements, increasing threats, and greater awareness,” she explains.

Mobile-targeted attacks, AI-driven threats, and ransomware are on the rise, while government and private sector efforts are fueling demand for better security. However, cyber insurance adoption remains low due to misconceptions and lack of expertise. “Continuous learning is crucial to staying ahead of evolving threats,” she emphasizes.

Ultimately, the need for professionals who could effectively bridge the gap and provide expert guidance in this specialized area was the reason Lillian pursued the CCIS and continuing education.

Facing The Cyber Insurance Industry in Kenya as a Woman

Lilian shares her insight into the cyber insurance industry in Kenya as a woman: “Cyber, like many STEM fields, is still predominantly male, which can lead to feelings of isolation or being overlooked,” she explains. Gender imbalance, unconscious bias, and a lack of mentorship often make it harder for women to advance. Despite these challenges, women are making significant strides in the industry. “Organizations are increasingly recognizing the value of diversity and inclusion,” Lilian notes. As the industry evolves, fostering a more supportive environment will be key to encouraging more women to enter and thrive in the industry.

All in all, Lilian expresses, “The CCIS Certification will play a crucial role in my career growth, acting as both a validation of my skills and a catalyst for new opportunities,” as she continues to make headway in the cyber insurance industry in Kenya.
